Cemetery Sexton
Mount Olivet & Calvary Cemeteries – Diocese of Great Falls–Billings
Location: Great Falls, Montana
Position Type: Full-Time | Non-Exempt
Position Overview
The Diocese of Great Falls–Billings is seeking a mission‑driven, compassionate Cemetery Sexton to oversee the pastoral, operational, and administrative management of Mount Olivet and Calvary Cemeteries. This role ensures our cemeteries remain sacred, well‑maintained spaces reflecting the dignity of Catholic burial practices and offering comfort to grieving families. The Sexton also supervises groundskeeping operations at the Bishop’s Residence, the Pastoral Center, and Stites properties.
Key Responsibilities
Pastoral Care & Family Services
- Serve as a compassionate representative of the Diocese to families during times of loss.
- Coordinate interments, inurnments, and disinterments with funeral homes, clergy, and families.
- Provide guidance on burial arrangements, grave locations, and memorialization.
Operations & Grounds Management
- Participate in and oversee gravesite preparation, including grave opening and closing.
- Supervise groundskeeping staff across multiple diocesan properties.
- Manage landscaping, pruning, mowing, tree care, and snow removal.
- Oversee maintenance and safe operation of equipment and vehicles.
- Inspect, maintain, and adjust irrigation systems.
Administrative & Financial Oversight
- Maintain accurate records for plot ownership, burials, and perpetual care.
- Manage plot sales, contracts, and financial transactions.
- Assist with annual budgeting, revenue tracking, and cost oversight.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness
- Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Identify and address potential hazards on cemetery grounds.
- Respond appropriately to weather-related or on‑site emergencies.
- Maintain logs of incidents, chemical use, and equipment checks.
Compliance
- Ensure all operations follow diocesan policy and Catholic burial practice.
- Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in all pastoral and administrative matters.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (education in business, theology, or cemetery management preferred).
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in cemetery operations, facilities management, or pastoral care.
- Completion of diocesan Safe Environment training and background check.
- Valid Montana driver’s license.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to learn cemetery management software.
- Ability to operate landscaping and heavy equipment (backhoe, snowplow, etc.).
- Ability to lift up to 100 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a Catholic or faith‑based organization.
- Knowledge of Montana cemetery laws and regulations.
- Practicing Catholic in good standing.
Work Environment
- Indoor and outdoor work in varying Montana weather conditions.
- Regular exposure to heavy machinery and loud equipment.
- Frequent interaction with the public, clergy, and funeral directors.
- Occasional evening or weekend work.
Additional Information
- Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
- Performance evaluation at six months; annually thereafter.
- Continued employment requires compliance with all diocesan policies, including Safe Environment standards.
